Mt 21:23: And of Him having come into
the temple, teaching,
the chief priests
and the elders of the
people came to Him, saying,
“By what authority
are You doing
these things? And who
gave to You
this authority?” Mt 21:24: And Jesus answering, said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I also will say to you by what authority I do these things. Mt 21:25: From where was the baptism of John? From heaven, or from men?” And they were reasoning with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘from heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ Mt 21:26: But if we should say, ‘from men,’ we fear the multitude; for all hold John as a prophet.” Mt 21:27: And answering Jesus, they said “We do not know.” And He said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. |
Mk 11:27: And they come again to Jerusalem. And as He is walking
in the temple,
the chief priests and
the scribes and the
elders come to Him. Mk 11:28: And they were saying to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things? Or who gave You this authority, that You should do these things?” Mk 11:29: And Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing, and you answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. Mk 11:30: The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? Answer Me.” Mk 11:31: And they began reasoning with themselves, saying, “What should we say? If we should say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ Mk 11:32: But should we say, ‘From men’…” They were afraid of the people, for all were holding that John truly was a prophet. Mk 11:33: And answering to Jesus, they say, “We do not know.” And Jesus says to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.” |
Lk 20:1: And it came to pass on one of the days He was teaching the
people in the temple
and proclaiming the gospel, the chief
priests and the scribes came
up with the
elders, Lk 20:2: and spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us by what authority You do these things, or who is the [one] having given to You this authority?” Lk 20:3: And answering, He said to them, “I also will ask you one thing, and you tell Me: Lk 20:4: The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?” Lk 20:5: And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we should say ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’ Lk 20:6: But if we should say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.” Lk 20:7: And they answered, they did not know from where. Lk 20:8: And Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.” |
In the temple, the priests and the elders approached him, saying:
“By what authority do you do this, and who gave you this authority?”
He answered them, “I, too, will ask you a question.
Was John’s baptism from heaven or from humans?”
They discussed amongst themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’
But if we say, ‘From humans,’ we (will fear) the people for they (are convinced) that John was a prophet.”
So they answered that they did not know. Then Jesus told them, “Neither will I tell you with what authority I do this.”
