Jesus withdrew alone in a boat. The crowds followed him. He was moved
with compassion for them.
As evening came, the twelve approached him and said, “The place is deserted. Let the crowd go away to villages so they can get some food.”
But he said to them, “You give them to eat.”
He asked “How many loaves do you have?” They replied, “Five loaves of bread and two fish.”
He told them to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, ⎡blessed them|gave thanks⎤, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set down next the crowd.
They all ate and were full. They collected the leftover pieces into twelve baskets.
There were about five thousand men.
