Herod Throws John the Baptist in Prison

Mt 14:3: γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάννην ἔδησεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐν φυλακῇ ἀπέθετο διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ· Mk 6:17: Αὐτὸς γὰρ Ἡρῴδης ἀποστείλας ἐκράτησεν τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸν ἐν φυλακῇ διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι αὐτὴν ἐγάμησεν· Lk 3:19: δὲ Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης, ἐλεγχόμενος ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ περὶ Ἡρῳδιάδος τῆς γυναικὸς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν πονηρῶν ὁ Ἡρῴδης,

Lk 3:20: προσέθηκεν καὶ τοῦτο ἐπὶ πᾶσιν καὶ κατέκλεισεν τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐν φυλακῇ.¶

Mt 14:3: For Herod, having seized John, bound him and put [him] in prison, on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. Mk 6:17: For Herod himself, having sent, seized John, and bound him in prison, on account of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her. Lk 3:19: But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of his brother, and concerning all [the] evils that Herod had done,

Lk 3:20: added this yet to all: He also locked up John in prison.

 

 

 


Herod put John in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother’s wife.
